Mackinac Island & Sault St. Marie

Mackinaw Island was such a treat. We added it to our itinerary at the last moment and was probably one of the best places we traveled to. It is a beautiful island on Lake Huron. No motor vehicles are allowed. All business deliveries are done on horse carriages or bikes! Here is one of my favorite shots from the island.
We traveled to the island on a ferry...with horses...and no one got sick!
Here is a picture of the bridge that connects the UP with the lower part of Michigan. When I took pictures out the west side of the boat the water looked amazing.
Here is a picture of the Grand Hotel from Mackinac Island.
My favorite lighthouse of the entire trip!!!

Kate got to ride on daddy most of the time we hiked around the island. Her foot huggers were cutting into her ankle after so much walking.
We found Graveyards and below is a picture of the governors summer mansion.

 The Grand Hotel!

After we returned from the island we decided we needed to travel across the bridge. Lake Huron was on the East and Lake Michigan was on the west.

The next day we visited Sault St. Marie and the famous Soo locks that connect Lake Superior to the Lower lakes. Lake Superior has a much higher water level. The first boat we got to watch go through the soo locks was a boat from the coast guard. It was so small to watch but you could really see the difference in the two bodies of water as you watched it go through.
The bridge behind the Soo Locks is the bridge to Canada. G & G and Greg were able to go and get us some Canadian treats while we waited for boats to cross through the locks.
Here is our first boat....watch out it is a big one!

 Can you see it?

In the soo locks farther from where we were a bigger ship went through. You can see in the pictures the difference as the water level rose in order to help this ship get back to Lake Superior.

Following the Soo Locks we went to tour the inside of a ship called the Valley Camp.

On the way home we found another beautiful lighthouse to visit along Lake Superior's shore.

We also found the smallest branch in the Germfask Michigan. They had two members from the branch, the bishop from an hour and a half away and the 8 people in our party. It was a great experience.
Here we are enjoying the chocolate from Canada.
